My deepest sympathy is to Harvey's family at this time of his passing.
Harvey Lugten was the first superintendent to give me a teaching position . I so appreciated being able to teach, in Byron Center, in my hometown area. I grew to love teaching and directing theater and I will always be grateful that he took a chance on me and gave me a start in education.
Before I met Mr.Lugten, and taught, I worked at Grand Valley Nursing Center and had the privilege of caring for his mother, Jennie. She liked to have things a certain way,and she really seemed to enjoy me taking care of her. I understood her and the way she desired to be assisted and the two of us got along very well.
My dad was the administrator there, and he knew her, as well, as he passed her room often as he walked the halls daily.
I recall revealing to Mr. Lugten that I had cared for his mother, sometime after I was hired at the high school, and recall he was pleased to know that I helped his mom.
Your family members touched my life in a variety of ways. I will remember Mr. Lugten ,fondly, as he put his trust in me by giving me my first teaching assignment.
